We develop and use two tools for image enhancement. The first is a simple type of fuzzy interpolation for zooming in or out, or for affine transformations in general. The second is a simulation of side lighting that can be applied from any of the eight directions in convolution masks to highlight regions and put shadows on the opposite side from the direction of pseudo light. Our application first enlarges an image using fuzzy interpolation to provide more pixels for processing, followed by applying pseudo side lighting to yield a 3-dimensional topography. Upon reduction of this image to the original size using fuzzy interpolation again, the resulting image shows details that stand out in a manner that humans can interpret more easily from their visual experience.
