It is desired that the surface brightness of rolledstrip is estimated with high accuracy in mill operation.Azushima et al have reported that the surface brightness isexpressed by three factors of the inlet oil film thickness and thesurface roughness of roll and strip before rolling and a newsystem for estimating the surface brightness after each pass inan actual mill for cold rolling of stainless steel can be derivedby developing this relation. In order to evaluate the new system,stainless steel strips are rolled in stainless steel makingcompanies in Japan and the workpiece sheets are cut off fromthe rolled strip after each pass. By using the new estimatingsystem, the workpiece sheets are rolled using a laboratory milland the surface brightness of the rolled workpiece sheets aftereach pass are measured. The surface brightness obtained by thesimulation rolling test is in good agreement with one by theactual mill and it is seen that by the new system, it is possibleto be estimated the surface brightness of the each pass in actual mill.
