The internal structures of aeolian dunes are often inferred from shallow trenches, natural scours, models based on dune geometry and sedimentary processes, and/or interpretations of ancient strata. However, there is some difficulty in directly observing the internal stratigraphy of aeolian landforms, particularly complex bedforms and multiple reactivation surfaces. The relative homogeneity of aeolian deposits (quartzitic sand), provide a unique opportunity for ground penetating radar (GPR) to reveal subsurface information. The noninvasive GPR technique provides near-surface, high-resolution (dm scale(, nearly continuous profiles of many coastal aeolian environments. The results of this study are from foredunes in northwest Oregon and back-barrier crescentic and parabolic dunes in the Outer Banks, North Carolina.
