The effects of carbohydrate-degrading enzymes on two softood kraft pulps, differing primarily in fiber coarseness, were assessed. The pulps were treated with three different enzyme preparations: a crude cellulase; an endoglucanase; and a xylanase. It was apparent that all enzymatic treatmens could enhance handsheet density, irrespective of the furnaish used. The most significant modificant modifications were revident after treatment with the crude cellulase. Although evident after treatment with the crude cellulase. Although improved densification occurred with both furnishes, the inherent fiber coarseness influenced to the resonse of certain handsheet strength properties to the dffierent enzymatic treatments. Both the bust and tensile indices were improved by the crude cellulase treatment of the high coarseness pulp, while a similar trend was not evident with the low coarseness funish. In contrast, the bust and tesile strengths of both pulps were improved by the endoglucanase treatment.
