This paper describes the development of a purpose-built, design and trouble shooting software package for multiple duct contaminant extraction systems. The software package is an interactive menu-driven application developed using the MatLab mathematical analysis software and is based largely on the ASHRAE (American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers) method of duct sizing with some modifications reflecting local practice. The software has been tested against a number of practical case studies which are used as a vehicle to provide details on the difficulties that may arise in the design of very complex systems by both manual and numerical methods.
