Analysis of the rate of decay in pressure drop across a deaerating bulk solid suggests the possibility of determining a time constant, based on an exponential decay rate, as a characterising parameter for bulk solids. This paper describes the analytical and experimental procedures adopted. These include suggestions for extrapolating to a zero plenum chamber condition, and a method for normalising the results to account for differing bed heights. Results obtained for a wide range of materials are presented.
