This paper is based on a project with which the author was associated during initial study, development of concept and implementation. The paper indicates how a proper material handling system in a steel plant can contribute significantly to the productivity of a steel plant. The author has noticed that this area is often neglected in many steel plants all around the world. The main purpose of this paper is to highlight that the steel plant operators should give a closer look into the material handling system for improvement of their plant performance. It is possible that a minor investment in this area may result in considerable improvement in the productivity and profitability of the steel plant. The paper describes (a) how the original system of raw material handling of the steel plant turned into the source of productivity and pollution problem (b) identification of remedial measures required and (c) details of the facilities provided to take care of the problems.
