An efficient finite element method called the Inverse Approach (I.A.) is developed by the authors since 1987 to estimate the large strains in thin metallic panels obtained by deep drawing. In this paper, we recall the basic ideas and assumptions of our I.A. and present some recent developments and improvements such as the consideration of bending effects, the introduction of restraining forces due to drawbeads, the interface between IDEAS Master Series and our in-house code FLECHE, the improvements of the nonlinear resolution algorithms. Two international benchmark problems (LDH tests of Numisheet'96 and drawing of the Baden-Baden oil pan) are presented. The results are compared with other numerical and experimental results.
