Situated learning: Why it is necessary to rethink the theory

This paper provides a critique of situated learning as a theoretical perspective and invokes a conceptualisation first aired in the context of literacy education to do so. It is argued that situated learning falls short of being an appropriate learning theory to guide the design of instruction, particularly instructional multimedia, by its failure to account for the critical dimension in learning.
