Computer Aided Decision Analysis in Industrial Engineering

Although engineering economy and the decision tree has been part of some traditional IE programs, solution of much larger problems with multiple and conflicting criteria was not possible with the methodologies taught. Inclusion of MCDM methods and the application of user friendly software such as EXCEL, EXPERT CHOICE SOFTWARE and VISA has improved the decision making knowledge of students in their workplace. Electronic communication via email, collection of information and literature related to the assignment or problems which students might encounter while working on their assignment, makes group work much easier for graduate students. The positive feedback, particularly from students in industry indicates that they consider the subject an enhancement to their technical knowledge in resolving conflict between criteria and in communicating these ideas to their colleagues and managers, specially in areas where decisions have been made through tedious manual steps, or rules of thumbs.
