A new concept of superposition was used for observing three-dimensional soil deformation and failure patterns. By superposition, three-dimensional images of deformation and failure patterns were developed by superimposing and synchronizing a series of two-dimensional observations corresponding to the changes in the lateral position of a tine tool in a glass-sided soil-bin. The failure patterns and deformations due to the forward movement of a flat simple tine were observed under a quasi-static condition. In order to create images for a three-dimensional failure, two-dimensional observations of a number of test runs, by changing the lateral position of the tine from the glass with known distances were obtained and superimposed at two sides of the tine. By this method, a series of three-dimensional images of the soil profile in front of and at the two sides of the tool could also be created for the whole test run following the defined coordinate system. Test results obtained for tines of a given specifications were compared with the selected three-dimensional soil failure models used for prediction so far.
