Graded synaptic transmission is widespread and its gain can be modulated (Johnson & Harris-Warrick 1990, 1997). When two non-oscillatory model neurons are connected with reciporocal inhibitory graded transmission and the synaptic gain is sufficiently low, but still within physiological limits, out-of-phase network oscillations can occur by a new mechanism that is neither "release" or "escape" (Wang & Rinzel 1992).
