The combustion of coal results in materialcomprised of several different minerals that could be used ascommodities for other industries. In a study conducted bySouthern Illinois University and CQ Inc. researchers, a processflow sheet was developed to separate and recover four valuableby-products, i.e., fly ash-derived magnetite, a pozzolanic portionfor cement, cenospheres, and unburned carbon, from threedifferent fly ash sources. The flow sheet was derived based on adetailed characterization study and an independent evaluation ofvarious separation processes. The characterization studyidentified the distribution of the four byproducts as a function ofparticle density and particle size. The results of this study willbe presented in this publication, which includes an economicanalysis of the integrated beneficiation approach.
