A rational approach to the assessment of environmental issues in stone quarrying districts

The practical viability and the efficiency of matrixmethods for the assessment of environmental impact havealready been demonstrated in the case of individual mining andquarrying projects. However no successful attempts have yetbeen made for extending the concept to entire districts. To thisend, the AEVIA approach has been used as the basis for theconstruction and the implementation of a suitable procedurecapable of solving the problem. The paper deals with theapplication of the devised matrix tool to the case of adimensional stone district in Sardinia, where more than 15granite quarries are concentrated in a small area, very close to atown and characterised by the presence of forests and ofsignificant naturalistic and cultural values.
