The paper presents an outline of current UnitedStates Department of Energy (DOE) initiatives to "cleanup"contaminated sites that have resulted from 50 years of nuclearweapons development and testing, utilizing innovativeenvironmental technologies. A wide variety of innovative andexisting technologies are being developed and applied toremediate contaminated sites. The health and safety aspects ofthe technology should be incorporated early in its developmentto minimize costly design changes. The operators of thetechnologies require mandated safety and health trainingespecially in preparation for working in hazardous operations.
