The use of ammoniacal ammonium carbonate(AAC) leaching for zinc extraction from secondary materials isreported. Detailed results are presented of a laboratoryinvestigation on the de-zincing and detoxification of ElectricArc Furnace (EAF) carbon steel-making dust. As received fromthree steelmaking companies, EAF dust samples were all foundto be toxic when tested according to the current US toxicitytesting procedure. AAC leaching of the dusts was found able torapidly solubilize the contained free zinc oxide to yield non-toxic residues.
