New solutions are necessary to reduce the high levels of accidents, congestion and pollution caused by today's ever-increasing traffic volumes. Advanced telementic applications can improve traveller support services, allowing citizens to make a better choce for their daily trips. Tangible improvements are expected on indicators such as quality of service, travel times, number of accidents, regularity of public transport, and pollution. Moreover, sophisticated communication facilities should improve the competitive position of public transportation systems relative to others. In order to obtain this advantage it is important to keep pace with the development of the capabilities of mobile communication and information processing systems. In this paper we point out the requirements of the future telecommunications network for transport systems using ATT (Advanced Transport Telematics) to support safe and advanced services for customers and operators; we then present a pilot project in this application area, which will start soon.
