Clinical relevancy of the modelling of left ventricular filling

A Color Doppler M-mode echocardiogram (CDMME) of left ventricular inflow provides a spatiotemporal image of mitral early filling (E) and atrial contraction (A) waves. It has been introduced as a promising new clinical approach for the assessment of left ventricular (LV) filling. In vivo studies, suggesting several methods for the quantification of wave propagation velocity (WPV) from these color M-mode images of early diastolic filling, have shown that the propagation velocity correlates well with indices of left ventricular relaxation and end-diastolic pressure. The characteristics of the different methods are under investigation by implementing the different suggested approaches for quantification of left ventricular early filling wave propagation velocity in an automated set of computer algorithms. These approaches are validated with a 2D axisymmetrical blood-wall interaction model of LV filling. The obtained computer simulations confirm that the filling patterns are a complex interaction of propagating pressure waves in the LV and relaxation and compliance of the LV.
