Bluff body flows are generally complex by their very nature as they exhibit wakes with high turbulence level, large unsteady vortices, unsteady separation zones, reattachment, even multiple, etc. Although LES has great potential for this type of flows its success is not automatic. The delicate interplay between the explicitly computed flow, the SGS model, the spacing of the employed mesh and details of the numerical algorithm is difficult to handle. The present paper discusses general features of LES and reports own computations for the circular cylinder.
