The prediction of the onset of transition in the boundary layer plays an important practical role. Usually this prediction is performed by using simple criteria or a more accurate way, which requires the results of the linear stability theory and of an additional criterion. There is theoretically a third possible procedure only based on the modelling of the successive instabilities which occur in the boundary layer. The objective of the present paper is to give an overview of the current state-of-the-art at ONERA-CERT of such an ambitious method.
