Risk analyses, quality assurance, and regulations in landfill engineering and environmental protection

Risk analyses, quality assurance, and regulation in landfill engineering and environmental protection involve the entire field of geotechnical engineering in conjunction with several other disciplines. Even political aspects and those of public opinion and acceptance have to be considered, especially in case of siting. The paper emphasises that an appropriate pre-treatment of waste is the promising technology in order to aviod the passing-on of environmental impacts of today's waste disposal facilities to future generations. In conjunction with the multi-lbarrier s ystem, higly pre-treated waste may even be considered an ''internal barrier'' of landfills.
