Design optimisation of a simple 2-D aerofoil using stochastic search methods

This paper describes the results of a study which considers the aerodynamic optimisation of 2-D aerofoil given a number of realistic but simple constraints. It is shown that this simple problem, with a realistic objective function, has a number of local optima. It is demonstrated that stochastic optimisation methods provide a distinct advantage over the more conventional methods and it is further shown that the most optimal results are obtained when these methods are combined with the moreconventional methods.
