Crystallite ferrous borate with a particle size of 10-30 nm was prepared using ethanol supercritical fluid drying technique. Tribology properties of 500 SN base oil and the oil containing so-prepared nanometer ferrous borate particles were evaluated. Results indicated that wear resistance and load carrying capacity of the latter were higher and the friction coefficient was lower than that of the former. The improvement of tribology properties of the oil under low load came from the deposition of nanometer ferrous borate. The deposition and tribochemical reaction resulted in the formation of diboron trioxide on the wear scar.
