Transverse Cracking Prevention and Segregation Reduction in Slab Continuous Casting

Quality of continuous cast steel has been improved by carrying out an integrated analysis of steel casting and slab formation. Operational parameters of steel casting on the #1 slab continuous casting machine (SCC) at China Steel Corporation have been analyzed in this study. The main quality concerns were transverse cracking at the surface of Nb-added steel and excessive carbon segregation in high-C steel slabs. Comprehensive research based on theoretical analyses, experimental temperature measurements in solidifying slab, laboratory evaluation of nozzle spraying, and computer simulation of the process has been performed in order to define the problems associated with machine's design or/and operational practice. The actual data obtained by direct temperature measurements in solidifying slabs of Nb-added steel and high-C steel, as well as results of evaluation of cooling water distribution in the different secondary cooling zones as a function of different spray nozzles installed, provided a foundation for computer simulation of the process.
