Towards a New Non-Metallic Anchorage System for Post-Tensioned Applications with Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic Tendons

During the last few years, post tensioned masonry has been used in widely different structural applications, offering alternative strong and elegant structural forms to plain and reinforced masonry. However, concerns about steel corrosion have limited the widespread adoption of post tensioned masonry. During the same period, the use of advanced composite material (ACMs) has grown rapidly in a number of different industries. More recently, tendons made of Fibre Reinforced Plastics (FRP) have been introduced to prestressing applications. However, the use of FRP tendons in post tensioning is limited because of the absence of a simple and reliable anchorage system which fulfills all the technological requirements of an anchor. Use of FRP tendons in prestressing today is therefore limited, depending on a variety of techniques to transfer the prestressing force to the surrounding media. We have developed a new metallic anchorage system for Carbon-Fibre-Reinforced-Plastic (CFRP) tendons which allows the development of the full strength of the tendon and passes the PTI fatigue test. Here we will describe another non-metallic anchorage system for post-tensioning with CFRP tendons which we are currently developing and testing. The new anchorage system exhibits high mechanical and environmental durability.
