Some Economic Aspects of korean Unification

摘要

My task in this paper is to ocnsider some of the economic aspects of Korean unification. In more general terms, within the confines of this ocnference my paper relats to the specific issues faced by two different social systems as they seek to integrate into one. The process of meshing two distinct economic, political and social systems will be generations in the making and as is the wont of economists, my strategy si to pare the problem down to some economic essentials and then to asssume whatever is necessary to make the problem tractable without gutting the issues of interest. HTe two aspects of unification upon which I focus are the short run conseuences of choosing an appropriate monetary unit for North Korea once unification has been agreed, and the long run consequences of adding economic freedom to an economy which has bee nrepressed for so many years. A numbe of other issues arise incidentally, but these tow are the ones which contain the most controversial ocntributions.
