Discontinuous grain growth (D.G.G.) or "secondary recrystallization" has caused forming problems for AA2117 alloy rivets. The large grains resulting from D.G.G. cause the rivets to upset non-uniformly when the second rivet head is made. Parameters used to control D.G.G. are composition, initial recrystallized grain size, texture and heat treat conditions.
