Owing to a combination of factors such as the scarcity of habitable land, a concentrated road transport network and the pressure brought about by the rapid pace of development in the last few years, road traffic noise is inevitably a problem thatHong kong has to face. Conscientious efforts in planning of land-use and new roads are required to avoid further excessive traffic noise impact on the population. This paper outlines Hong Kong's experience in planning against the traffic noise impactfrom new roads. Both direct mitigation measures in the form of barrier or enclosure on roads and indirect mitigation measures in the form of acoustic insulation of buildings are introduced and illustrated with an example of a road project in a reclaimedland.
