To overcome the disadvantages and to facilitate the use of bentonite as adsorbent in wastewater treatment, a new way is put forward in this article in which bentonite is immobilised in a polymer matrix to form a type of porous grain compound adsorbent. And the characteristics of adsorption of Cu(II) onto the novel adsorbent is tested. The result shows that the polymer–bentonite compound adsorbent (PBCA) not only has a high specific surface area but also is strong to resist hydraulic damage. The kinetic data of PBCA adsorption of Cu(II) follow the second-order kinetic model and the isotherm data are fitted with Langmuir model. The sorption capacities increase with the increasing of the solution pH ranged from 1.6 to 5.6. The calculated thermodynamic parameters indicate that the sorption nature is endothermic and spontaneous.
