To overcome the disadvantages and to facilitate the use of bentonite as adsorbent in wastewatertreatment, a new way is put forward in this article in which bentonite is immobilised in a polymermatrix to form a type of porous grain compound adsorbent. And the characteristics of adsorption ofCu(II) onto the novel adsorbent is tested. The result shows that the polymer–bentonite compoundadsorbent (PBCA) not only has a high specific surface area but also is strong to resist hydraulicdamage. The kinetic data of PBCA adsorption of Cu(II) follow the second-order kinetic model and theisotherm data are fitted with Langmuir model. The sorption capacities increase with the increasing ofthe solution pH ranged from 1.6 to 5.6. The calculated thermodynamic parameters indicate that thesorption nature is endothermic and spontaneous.
