Canine hereditary nephritis-an update

Hereditary nephritis (HN)refers to a specific group of progressive glomerular diseases that are caused by mutations in certain genes involved with basement membrane (type IV)collagen synthesis. In Alport syndrome, which is the analogous condition inhumans,the nephropathy often is accompanied by sensorineural deafness and occasionally by ocular abnormalities. To date, at least four different forms of HN have been identified in dogs.
