October 1996 marked the eight anniversary of the start-up of he Tennessee Valley Authority's (TVA) 160-MW Atmospheric Fluidized Bed Combustion (AFBC) Demonstration Unit; Shawnee Power Plant, Unit 10. The unit, which was a repowering of theexisting Unit 10 turbine generator set, is still one of the largest AFBC units in the world. It was built by ABB Combustion Engineering, Inc. in cooperation with the Atmospheric Fluidized Bed Development Corporation (a consortium of 14 companies), theElectric Power Research Institute, the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Duke Power Company, and TVA.Over the last eight years, which included an extended start-up period and a parametric test program, the unit has operated (through October 1, 1996) for over 45,929 hours, producing over 5.34 million MWh of electricity. Since the completion of the testprogram, the unit has had an average availability of 78.8 percent and a capacity fhctor of 56.9 percent. The unit is operated on economic dispatch along with the other fossil units in the TVA system, and unit output is regulated (by slumping/fluidizingbeds and changing bed temperature) to follow system load swings throughout the day. This paper will cover the last four years of operation of the unit. Previous operating history is documented in other papers. A summary of the unit's operation (both overall and individual systems), the major problems that have been encountered(primarily in-bed tube and feed line wear), system design modifications, and operating statistics will be presented. In addition, historical boiler and environmental performance data will be presented.
