Operating experience of the tennessee valley authority's 160-MW atmospheric fluidized bed combustion demonstration unit

October 1996 marked the eight anniversary of the start-up of the Tennessee valley Authority's (TVA) 160-MW Atmospheric Fluidized Bed Combustion (AFBC) Demonstration Unit; Shawnee Power Plant, Unit 10. The unit, which was a repowering of the existing Unit 10 turbine generator set, is still one of the largest AFBC units in the world. It was built by ABB Combustion Engineering, Inc. in cooperation with the Atmospheric Fluidized Bed Development Corporation (a consortium of 14 companies), the Electric Power Research Institute, the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Duke Power Company, and TVA.
