Sulphur Compound Types in Bulgarian Lignite Extracts

One possibility to determine organic sulphur compounds was their specific chemical dcrivatization, i.e. oxidation/reduction, which resulted in functional group differentiation. IR spectroscopy was combined with selective oxidation for aliphatic sulphur types determination. The latter were much more easily oxidized than thiophenes, changing from sulphides to sulphoxides and resulted in a distinct band at 1035 cm~(-1) in the IR spectrum. The thiols and disulphides were measured by HJ reduction while thiophenes und aromatic sulphides were calculated by difference. Experimental data have depicted some peculiarities for sulphur distribution in two lignite extracts under study.
