1:1 (by volume) carbon disulfide-N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (CS_2-NMP) mixed solvent gave 5?wt% (daf) of extraction yield for Upper Freeport coal at room temperature. The yield further increased to 85 Wt% (daf) when a small amount of tetracya-noethylene (TCNE), a strong electron acceptor, was added to the mixed solvent. This high extraction yields obtained at room temperature highly suggests that the coal has supramolecular structure, i. e., highly aggregated structure.
