MATERIALS AND PROCESS TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPED FOR THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION

Design activities have been in progress for the International Space Station since the late 1980s. Although the guidelines for the International Space Station are to use existing technology to minimize risk and cost, many new technologies and design practices were developed in the materials and process area to provide essential or more efficient solutions than were available with established practices. This paper describes some of these new materials and processes and related design solutions, but makes no attempt at providing a complete list. The information presented was derived from the results of ground and flight tests conducted by many countries, their space agencies, aerospace industries, universities, and independent research organizations. These new technologies and design practices are expected to be of benefit for all future, long-duration, manned space vehicles. There are additional technologies that could be developed to enhance ISS operation, some of which are identified. The role of NASA's Space Environmental Effects program for the development of new technology is briefly described.
