Since solar energy can be harvested periodically, using solar power in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) requires a different approach to energy consumption from battery-based WSNs. Based on the energy model of a solar-powered node, this paper proposes an efficient energy-aware routing scheme which utilizes the backbone network consisted of energy-rich nodes. The backbone network handles most of the traffic while changing dynamically according to the amount of residual energy of each node. Simulation results demonstrate that our scheme not only reduces the end-to-end latency of data delivery but also maximizes the duty-cycle of each node, by performing an energy-adaptive operation.
