A new low-intensity magnetic Separator whichoperates by spinning particles in a continuously rotting magneticfield is able to reduce particle entrapment of non-magnetics toan almost insignificant level. In such separators the removal ofmagnetic particles from the separator is effected by their ownspinning motion rather than by being passively transported on a rotating drum.The structure of the new separator is very similar to that of theconventional wet drum separator except that the outer drum nowremains stationary while the magnets within it rotate.The separation method can be extended by the use of strongerrare-earth permanent magnets to the separation of mineralassemblages such as pyrrhotite, minerals of the ilmenite-hematite series, siderite and garnets. The use of a rotatingmagnetic field allows discrimination between minerals whichare paramagnetic, minerals of similar low magneticsusceptibility which are ferrimagnetic, and minerals which arestrongly ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic.
