We used compartmental modeling of a pyramidal cell to examine the hypothesis that prepotentials originate in hot spots or localized regions of high sodium and potassium con?ductances in the dendritic tree. The full range of experimentally observed prepotentials could be reproduced using compartmental models by incorporating hot spots containing fast sodium conductances and delayed rectifier potassium conductances in densities that were high relative to conductance densities estimated in labs where prepotentials were not observed.
