Silicon Nitride has been successfully joined to itself using a magnesium aluminosilicate glass-ceramic. Joining at 1100°C in a N_2 atmosphere, with an applied pressure of 2.5 MPa resulted in joint strengths, measured in 4-pt bending, of 171 ± 27 MPa, which offers sufficient strength for practical applications. Analysis of the fracture surfaces indicated that failure initiated within the silicon nitride, close to the interface. The contributions of residual stress and joint dimensions to the fracture behaviour are discussed, together with the implications for further progress in the use of glass-ceramic joining media.
