Chevrel Phase superconductors have great potential for high field applications due to their high upper critical fields. In this study the unusual field dependence for the critical current density (J_c) in Sn_1Mo_6S_8 was investigated. The samples were fabricated using a Hot Isostatic Press operating at 2000 bar and were characterised for phase composition using x-ray powder diffraction and electromagnetically using resistivity, susceptibility and dc. magnetisation as a function of field and temperature. J_c and the pinning force were calculated from the dc. magnetisation measurements. The peak effect was found in high fields and characterised in detail. This pinning mechanism could provide a route for achieving the required current density in Chevrel Phase materials for the next generation of high field magnets.
