Third Round of the ITER Strand Bench Mark Test

The second round of the ITER strand benchmark test was completed in 1995. The two main goals were the characterization of four strand types of industrial Nb_3Sn stands for the ITER Model Coil and the comparison of the test methods and results of the four ITER Home Teams. The third ITER strand benchmark test is an extension of the characterization to all the strands manufactured for the Model Coil. This characterization includes the determination of the critical current at 12 T and 4.2 K, the hysteresis and coupling losses in fields of +/-3 T, the residual resistive ratio, twist pitch, chrome plating thickness and Cu/non-Cu ratio. In addition, from each specimen, the critical current is measured at a magnetic field of 13 T and at temperatures between 4.2 K and 8 K.
