High performance ultrasound has recently obtained some interesting new techniques in chemical engineering such as ultrasonic standing wave atomization (USWA) of liquids, ultrasonic levitation of drops and particles and separation of particles from liquids and gases. In these applications, a resonant ultrasonic wave field is generated by means of two oscillating transducers or a signle transducer and a reflector. Understanding the wave field formation and characteristics in the resonant, high-amplitude case of ultrasonic standing wave fields as well as the interaction of the sound field with drops, particles and fluid ligaments is of great importance for the understanding and optimization of such processes.
