Because of their high specific properties and improved high temperature capability, continuous fibre reinforced Ti-MMCs for use as compressor disc materials are anticipated to enable a radical change in design from the conventional heavy disc andblades to a bladed ring (bling) which can result in up to 70% weight saving. However, manufacture of hoop reinforced Ti-MMC rings for bling application remains a challenge to materials scientists and engineers. In this paper we report a new process, named as spray/wind, in which vacuum plasma spraying (VPS) and fibre winding are integrated into one simultaneous process for manufacture of hoop reinforced Ti-MMC rings for aeroengine applications, with potential applications for a range of hoop reinforcedring, tube and disc-shaped components.
