Prepared Discussion of: A Look Behind the Boiler Water Treatment Guidelines - Comments on Present and Possible Future Practice

I would like to thank the authors for summarizing boiler water treatments utilized around the world and making recommendations on potential future enhancements. Tremendous strides have been made in the United States over the past ten years following the issuance of the Electric Power Research Institute's (EPRI) Interim Consensus Guidelines on Fossil Plant Cycle Chemistry to improve cycle chemistry and reduce boiler tube failures (1). Additional research conducted both in the US and abroad as part of an international collaborative effort has helped to further refine cycle chemistry guidelines and steam chemistry. As a result of these efforts, new guidelines have been published by EPRI for all volatile treatment (AVT), phosphate treatment (PT), caustic treatment (CT), and oxygenated treatment (OT) (2,3,4,5).
