The BELLE detector utilizes Resistive Plate Counters (RPCs) with large glass electrodes for detection of muons and K£'s. A module consists of two stacked glass RPCs in a double gap configuration with orthogonal readout strips. Pickup strips simultaneously detect the discharges in either of the gaps, resulting in module efficiencies in excess of 99 %. Fifteen (fourteen) layers of these modules are distributed in the magnet flux-return iron at every 47 mm of iron thickness to cover the barrel (endcap) region. Currently over 4000 square meters of RPC planes are being produced. We describe design and construction of RPCs and present their performance data.
