The use of nonlinear optical materials in the field of optics for second harmonic generation, parametric oscillators etc. is now common place and the field is well established (see for example Baldwin (1)). This paper is concerned with the use of nonlinear dielectric materials in high voltage nonlinear electronics. By comparison to optics this field is relatively new, due mainly to the lack of suitable materials. Potential applications of nonlinear dielectric materials innonlinear electronics are for parametric amplifiers and oscillators, and for high voltage shock wave and soliton generation. This paper describes the use of nonlinear ferroelectric materials for the generation of high voltage shock wavesand solitons. A new material, SbSI, which has not previously been used in this field has been found to have particularly good nonlinear properties in comparison to other ferroelectric materials. Its nonlinear dielectric characteristics aredescribed with special reference to the generation of high voltage shock waves and solitons.
