An interactive software program was developed utilizing high-quality color graphics and a hypertext approach. The software serves as a tutorial for those interested in obtaining basic factual information about fish contamination. Color graphics areused to identify and illustrate the basic fish contamination considerations, including "bioconcentration" and "bioaccumulation" processes. Schematics show how chemicals are discharged into waters and sediments and eventually make their way through the foodchain into fish tissue. Relevant terminology is defined (e.g., "lipophilic", "bioconcentration factor", etc.) in hypertext links. The program provides information on chemicals that can occur in fish tissues, including an in-depth "profile" for each ofthe bioaccumulative chemicals. Fish consumer "risk minimization" tips are also described, including filleting methods to reduce fatty tissues, cooking techniques that reduce exposure, and other considerations such as fish size. This program is illustrated with digitized photographs and colored line drawings. The program is completed and available on either floppy disk or CD-ROM from the Farm Building Plan Service at Purdue University.
