NPP Structures Strength: Russian Strength Regulations and ASME Code

The USSR Strength Regulations for NPP structures were firstly published in 1973. Their second edition, applicable in Russia nowadays was issued in 1986. Strength Regulations were developed with due regard for the available experience of NPP designing in the USSR, Rules and Regulations of the USSR Gosgortechnadzor for steam boilers and pressure vessels as well as the known world experience. The report comments on the principal differences between the RF Regulations and ASME Code, parts II,III,XI. The RF Regulations comparison with ASME Code was carried out to the following aspects: 1) general principles {ultimate states, basic design loads and modes); 2) classification of stresses and allowable stresses; 3) the choice of main dimensions and static strength; 4) fatigue strength; 5) brittle strength. Data summarized in the report illustrate the safety concept of NPP equipment designed in compliance with the RF Regulations and ASME Code in terms of its strength.
