The body force method is extended so as to be applicable to the analysis of the elastic problem of an aribtrarily shaped plate with an inclusion. The most characteristic point of the present method is use of the elastic field due to an isolated force acting in an infinite medium containing a circular inclusion as the fundamental solution. By using this elastic field, we can treat easily various problems of homogeneous, inhomogeneous, finite and infinite plates, only by changing the material constants in a matrix and an inclusion, or by varying a radius of the inclusion in the range of zero to infinity. Many results relating to the problems of cracks, notches and inclusions are presented. In addition to the theoretical background of the present method, a short history of the progress of the body force method is also shown.
